In this talk, I will explain the motives behind my ultimately failed quest to find Chinese winemakers in the Loire Valley. China’s reemergence as a global power and a wealthy society has been accompanied by rapid shifts in international migration. These shifts reflect the successive waves of the globalisation of China’s economy, but also the changing ways in which Chinese society engages with the world. In the past few years, I have been following middle-class Chinese who move to Europe in search for a more wholesome lifestyle. Their stories attest to a broader shift in which Europe has become a purveyor of desirable lifestyles to an expanding global middle class.
