ECHANGES, CIRCULATIONS, ET AFFRONTEMENTS SUR LA FRONTIÈRE MÉDITERRANÉENNE (XVIE – XVIIIE S.)

Résumé du projet

Le projet vise à étudier la frontière entre « chrétienté » et « Islam » en Méditerranée, conçue comme une zone à la fois d’affrontements, de circulation et d’échanges. Cette étude sera menée à travers la mise en commun de recherches locales et particulières, centrées sur un individu, un groupe, ou un événement, en veillant à confronter sources et bibliographie, par la mise en contact d’historiens « occidentalistes » et « orientalistes », dans le but de faire apparaître les processus d’interactivité. Il doit aboutir à préciser les relations militaires, politiques, économiques et culturelles entre l’Europe « chrétienne » et l’empire Ottoman « musulman » en révisant l’évolution globale à partir de cas locaux et concrets, qui permettront de mettre en valeur les changements dans les sociétés locales (notamment maritimes), le rôle de groupes particuliers (Corses, Maltais, chrétiens orientaux, notables musulmans), le rôle de l’Etat ottoman. La course et la piraterie occupent une place centrale dans cet espace de l’affrontement et de l’échange, et devraient apparaître sous diverses formes dans cette recherche. Les idéologies en présence seront évaluées, en plaçant leur usage dans le contexte du lieu, du moment et du locuteur, selon l’hypothèse qu’elles constituent un ensemble de ressources mobilisables pour l’action. L’usage des idéologies de croisade et de guerre sainte pourrait ainsi être révisé.

Profil du chercheur associé recherché

Le candidat doit être titulaire d’un poste de recherche ou d’enseignement dans une université ou un centre de recherche dans son pays. Il doit avoir une expérience de séjour et de coopération à l’étranger et de l’organisation de tables rondes ou de colloques internationaux. Il doit connaître l’arabe et/ou une autre langue orientale (ottoman), être à l’aise en français, en anglais et dans au moins une autre langue européenne (italien souhaité). Il doit avoir une familiarité avec des sources de l’époque moderne en langue(s) orientale(s), et avoir publié sur des sujets et selon des méthodes proches de ceux évoqués dans le projet. Son séjour doit aboutir à la production d’un ouvrage collectif, à partir d’une table ronde, et, éventuellement, à des publications personnelles du candidat.

EXCHANGES, ENCOUNTERS AND CONFRONTATIONS AT THE MEDITERRANEAN FRONTIER (16TH TO 19TH CENTURY)

Summary of the project

The project examines the frontier between “Christianity” and “Islam” in the Mediterranean from the 16th to 19th century, which is defined here as a zone of exchanges, encounters and confrontations. Local and specialized research will be merged ; that is to say, individuals, groups, or particular events shall be studied in comparative perspective in order to confront different sources and bibliographies. Thus the expertise of “Occidentalist” and “Orientalist” historians will be brought together ; the aim of this approach is to unveil the underlying interactive processes in the contemporary Mediterranean society. The project intends to analyse in detail the military, political, economic and cultural relations between “Christian” Europe and the “Muslim” Ottoman Empire by sketching a process of global evolution through the examination of local developments and factual evidence. This will assist in tracing changes in local societies (especially in the maritime sector), in the function of particular groups (Corsicans, Maltese, Eastern Christians, Muslim notables), and in the attitude of the Ottoman state towards Europe and its own Christian minorities. The important role, which privateers and pirates played in this space of exchange and confrontation, leads to their being studied in various ways in the course of this project. Contemporary ideologies will also be studied, special reference being made in this context to space, time and actors. This investigation will bear in mind the hypothesis that such ideologies constitute a conglomeration of resources to be mobilised for taking action ; it might therefore be possible to revise the existing paradigm of “crusade” vs. “jihad” (Holy War). The material result of the project is to be the publication of a collation of papers to be held in a joint workshop, which is to be organized by the selected candidate ; it is also intended that eventually further works of the successful candidate will be published.

Profile of the research associate

The candidate should be a holder of a research or teaching position at a university or research centre in his country. He should have the experience to work in foreign countries and to cooperate with institutions of foreign countries. Moreover, he should have organized international workshops or panels in international conferences. He should know Arabic and/or another Oriental language (Ottoman), be fluent in French, in English and another European language. (Italian would be an asset) He should be familiar with sources of the 16th to 19th century in Oriental language(s) and ought to have published on subjects mentioned here. In addition to that, he should have worked according to the methodology raised in the project outline. The stay of the candidate at Tours should result first of all in a collective volume, which contains the results of a joint workshop, and eventually in personal publications of the candidate.
